No, crypto and rugby are not the same. Rugby is funnier

Talk about not reading the room. An enthusiastic press release from a crypto exchange this week claimed that “Rugby World Cup and Crypto: Two Worlds, Same Principles”. I kid you not. With all the words capitalised, so you know it’s been cut-n-pasted from a US press release. “What does rugby have to do with cryptocurrency?” the email correctly asked, and then argued five seemingly similar points to prove it.

These included comparisons to defence, strategy and the utterly improbable: “Stay legal, rules are important”.  Who do they think they are fooling?

Rugby is unlike any other sport – even American football. It’s also a lot funnier.

When @Micylaaa on X, asked: “can someone please explain the 7/1 split to me but use wine as a reference?” the “nou gaan ons braai” response sums up South African gees (spirit) in one tweet:

The biggest beneficiary of this age of social media memes is Checkers Sixty60 – after the Springboks alternative uniform was unveiled as hyper-jade by kit sponsors Nike. The colour bears a striking similarity to mouthwash as it does the Sixty60 delivery app.

Comedian Vermaak My Dag’s TikTok of a Checkers delivery truck which he calls “die Bokke setoerbus” is hilarious – in precisely the way crypto is not.
