Following the news of DStv’s annual price hike making headlines this morning, MultiChoice has announced that it’s trying to broadcast the upcoming Rugby World Cup (8 September – 28 October) in 4K UHD. The broadcaster feels that it set a precedent after broadcasting the FIFA World Cup in the higher definition.
Usually, DStv caps its broadcasts to 1080i, a resolution that’ll hardly be noticed on a brand-new 4K TV. But it’ll be worth it for the odd occasion (like this one) that DStv manages to offer its subscribers some extra pixels.
MultiChoice of Madness
Speaking with TechCentral, MultiChoice COO Simon Camerer said that it would continue to offer ‘key global sports events’ in a higher resolution, meaning that the 2024 Olympic Games could also see the same treatment.
“[MultiChoice] will get to a point where 4K becomes more prevalent,” Camerer said. “It is our intention to do this after we set a bar around the soccer World Cup.” Camerer noted that negotiations with ‘upstream content providers’ were not yet over – meaning DStv’s hopes of a 4K rugby broadcast could still fall apart.

It’s worth mentioning that not all of the broadcaster’s decoders are capable of a 4K output. For that, you’ll need the broadcaster’s latest decoder; the Explora Ultra, or MultiChoice’s own Streama media box. If you’re decoderless, a subscription to Showmax Pro will suffice.
