Amazon confirms that a live-action God of War series is officially in the works

God of War series ordered at Amazon

In the hopes of finally creating a series that can live up to its videogame counterpart, Amazon has ordered the live-action adaptation of 2018’s God of War. Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins is set to lead the show. Don’t worry, Chris Pratt hasn’t been cast as the titular God of War. Yet. We can never be too careful these days.

It’s a-not me!

If you had your hopes up that the series would adapt the original 2005 God of War, sorry to disappoint you. Kratos’ foray into Norse mythology is the series that’s currently on people’s minds – especially after the release of God of War Ragnarök last month.

Amazon’s description tells us that it will “follows Kratos, the God of War, who, after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”

In good hands?

Santa Monica Studio, the developers behind the games, is also confirmed to be working on the show. Iron Man and Children of Men writers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus are set to head up the story. Cory Balrog, Sony Santa Monica Studio’s creative director, has joined as an executive producer, bringing along the studio’s Jeff Ketchem as co-executive producer. There are also a few hands from PlayStation Productions being thrown into the mix.

There’s not much else we know about God of War. Amazon just wanted everyone to know that it’s coming. Casting, release dates, directors, and budget haven’t yet been announced. Though if we’re already talking about fan casts – who better to run play Kratos than Kratos himself? Christopher Judge has acted and voiced the character since 2018, and even looks a lot like his videogame counterpart. Just sayin’.
