Huawei’s Watch Buds device is a smartwatch and a set of earbuds

Huawei Watch Buds Main

Huawei appears to have reached the wackier stage of product ideas. The company’s new Watch Buds device is an upcoming wearable device that is also a set of wireless earbuds. Because that makes perfect sense.

It must make sense to someone at Huawei because the Watch Buds appear to be a real thing. The Chinese company has officially teased them on the Weibo social network, marking them for release in China. Whether we’ll see them elsewhere, and whether we’ll want to, remains to be seen.

Watch Buds blossom

As the name suggests, the Watch Buds are a Huawei Watch that just happens to incorporate a set of the company’s in-ear ‘buds. They were originally leaked, but the concept seemed so strange that it was hard to believe that they were real. Until the official teaser.

Unfortunately, that’s about all the information available on this device that we can find. The reveal was supposed to go ahead at the beginning of December but Huawei has postponed the event for unspecified reasons.

There are a few things that seem obvious. The Watch Buds will run on Huawei’s own software platform. The case is probably magnetic and the watch itself should pack a larger-than-usual battery. That’s just physics. It takes more battery life to run two devices than it does just one or the other, after all.

When companies go wacky, there’s one of two ways for it to end. Samsung launched the incredibly odd Galaxy K Zoom in 2014. This was a compact camera that was also an Android smartphone. It was… heavy. The company went on to release the Galaxy S8 and the rest is history. LG, on the other hand, launched the LG Wing and very quickly succumbed to waning interest in the brand’s mobile tech. It’s far too early to say which direction Huawei is trending in but at least the company is trying out some new ideas.
