Group Test: The OnePlus Nord CE 2 is a solid mix

The OnePlus Nord CE 2 is a solid mix of midrange specs with a few flagship flourishes.

Its MediaTek Dimensity 900 internals are more powerful than the sub-R7,000 competition, and it’s the fastest-charging handset of the bunch.

With a 90Hz AMOLED screen, it isn’t quite as smooth as other operators, and with no OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) its camera can’t conquer all the competition. Still, it lasts a full day, packs a nifty under-display fingerprint scanner, and matches great gaming performance for the price.

Is it any good?

The headline here is that the Nord CE 2 is one of the most powerful phones you can pick up for under R7,000. Great for casual gamers who like 3D titles, it does a solid job playing back even demanding titles such as Genshin Impact at middling graphics settings.

Coming in at a similar size to the supremely pocketable Realme 9, the Nord CE 2 is comfortable to hold and handle, and with a neat raised camera bump it isn’t without some standout style. Like some others, it’s a fingerprint lover so will get grubby, but again it ships with a case in the box, so you can cover up the shiny back easily.

Keen to get a smokin’ hot new phone, but not keen to spend more than R7000 on it?
