Another day, another streaming service launched in South Africa. Actually, that doesn’t happen all that often. Universal+, a new streaming service comprising content from Universal’s TV and movie arms, Dreamworks, Telemundo, and E!, is launching in South Africa on 14 October.
Kinda.
Universal+ isn’t very
There’s a catch. There’s always a catch. See, you can access Universal+ in South Africa, and everywhere else in Africa, provided you’re a DStv subscriber. There doesn’t seem to be any way to sign up for it any other way. Viewing takes place via the DStv app or an Explora decoder.
“DStv subscribers will be able to stream thousands of hours of compelling entertainment…by visiting Catch Up on the DStv App or connected Explora and selecting Universal+.”
“[W]e are always looking to offer top entertainment to our DStv customers, and the addition of Universal+ aims to do just that. We are excited to bring the best of international content and the widest possible choice of great shows to satisfy all our viewers,” said Multichoice chief operating officer Simon Camerer.
The company has been looking to improve its services in South Africa of late. There have been a few missteps along the way this year, true. Multichoice is looking to win back viewers who are wandering in search of other products. Offering Universal+ to subscribers might attract a few extra eyeballs and paid subscribers.
