Netflix reveals its upcoming ad-supported tier will include less content

There’s been a lot of chatter recently surrounding Netflix’s upcoming ad-supported tier – with the latest news confirming that the tier won’t have as much content as the paid tiers do. Netflix broke the news during its Q2 2022 earnings interview.

Netflix lost almost a million subscribers but that’s less than half of the number it was expected to. This is the second quarter it has lost users. The first time was around the time that the company announced the ad-supported tier. Maybe that had something to do with it. But if you’re not paying for Netflix, you won’t get all of it. And that’s official.

Less flix

“Today, the vast majority of what people watch on Netflix, we can include in the ad-supported tier,” said Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. “There are some things that don’t — that we’re in conversation about with the studios on — but if we launched the product today, the members in the ad tier would have a great experience. We will clear some additional content, but certainly not all of it, but we don’t think it’s a material holdback to the business.”

Unfortunately, Netflix didn’t mention which titles would be missing from the new tier. We’ll have to wait until 2023 to see what Netflix deems worthy of its ad-supported tier. We can guess that most of the platform’s bigger shows will stay on the new tier, to avoid scaring off any new potential customers. If viewers can’t access Stranger Things or The Umbrella Academy, then what’s the point?
