Password sharing is an issue streaming services have faced since… well, they launched. Which isn’t that long go for Multichoice-owned DStv. Its streaming service launched back in 2019. Now, it’s about to start limiting concurrent streams.
On the DStv streaming service, subscribers can stream live content and sports, catch up on series, and stream from a library of shows. If you happen to have a full DStv subscription/decoder/dish combo, that is. A bundle that can cost you up to R840p/m for the Premium option.
DStv’s single choice
This means many families (and often friends) have opted to share passwords to access DStv’s licenced content on different devices. These devices may even be in different houses, towns, or provinces. This happens on all the streaming services, though – DStv isn’t special in any way.
The broadcaster is implementing “… efforts to counteract password sharing and piracy,” according to a notice published on its website.
“From 22 March 2022, customers will be limited to streaming DStv on one device at a time. They will still be able to watch previously downloaded content on a second device,” it details.
This means no single account will be accessible as a streaming service on more than one device at any given moment. In comparison, the premium Netflix tier allows for up to five concurrent streams.
You’ll technically still be able to share your password with friends and family. The only difference is you’ll have to set up a shared calendar or something. “No, we will not limit the number of people using a login, however, we are limiting (to one) the number of people who can stream at the same time,” DStv says.
