OnePlus is the latest company that seems keen on trying its hand at making a tablet. Larger, more successful companies have tried and failed, like Google with its Pixel Slate, so this should be interesting.
With Samsung and Apple dominating the space with well over 50% combined market share for what seems like forever, even third place tablet maker Lenovo struggles with only 9% market share. Xiaomi recently released its own attempt in the form of the Xiaomi Pad 5 and Pad 5 Pro. Is there space for another manufacturer in this already difficult market?
OnePlus pad equals?
If the signs are to be believed then the OnePlus Pad will see a European and Indian release. This is based on the fact that patents were filed in those countries for the name “OnePlus Pad”. Anywhere else is a big fat ‘maybe’. But we don’t reckon OnePlus will limit itself to just two regions (and revenue streams).
It isn’t clear when the Pad will launch exactly or how many different models there will be in total but it isn’t likely to launch alongside the company’s flagship phones, the OnePlus 10 and 10 Pro — slated for an early 2022 release.
Unfortunately, it also isn’t clear which market segment OnePlus will be targeting with the tablet. This means there aren’t any technical specs to speak of (not even the rumoured kind) or any price points.
The smart move would be the budget to mid-range segment (Apple has the high-end pretty much on lock). Or maybe the company goes back to its roots with a very competitively priced ‘flagship tablet killer’. Stranger things have happened.
