Back in August, we got wind that WhatsApp was working on adding a message reactions feature from WABetaInfo. Back then it was still very much a rumour but WABetaInfo has a pretty solid track record when it comes to features and all news WhatsApp related, and it’s just proven that with an update to the feature.
As we speculated, the feature should look similar to that of almost every other social media app, including Slack, Discord and WhatsApp’s owner, The App Formally Known as Facebook in that users will be able to react to messages with an emoji.
Okay, but how do we react to reactions?
The latest update to the message react feature from WABetaInfo confirms a few things. Message reactions will be available in individual chats as well as group chats but, the site reaffirms that message reactions won’t be anonymous.
According to the tipster, you’ll only be able to react to a message once, so you better make it count. No word yet on if the feature will have an undo button — we sure hope it does — hopefully that news will come later.
This is a preview of message reactions, from the 2.21.22.17 beta update.
Unfortunately, it looks like a bug because it’s not possible to send a reaction. pic.twitter.com/T3ACGivhAK

You also won’t get as many choices for your reaction emoji as you might’ve thought. At least initially, there will be six to choose from. So you’d better hope your reaction falls in line with one of those, otherwise, you’re probably better off using a good old reaction gif.
Unfortunately, we still don’t have a release date for this feature other than the usual “soon” but we’ll be sure to update you if and when that changes.
