The world is bound to be one bakkie richer soon. Ford has revealed its next-generation Ranger, complete with a V6 diesel variation and improved tech. That’s excluding the updated exterior design that’s reminiscent of the brand’s much-loved F-150.
As expected, we’ll see the new ranger arrive in three variations: the XLT, the Sport and the Wildtrak. They all come with a completely new grille design, LED C-clamp headlights framing it, a shoulder line down the sides and bolder wheel arches.
Within the wheel arches, you’ll have the choice of 17in alloy wheels or 20in machine-face multi-spoke alloys.
Stranger Ranger
Let’s turn our attention under the hood for a moment — barring the V6 diesel engine, the new Ranger will be available in two 2.0-litre diesel single turbo performance variations, in addition to the 2.0-litre bi-turbo we know all-too-well. The company also detailed a 2.3-litre petrol EcoBoost variation for selected markets.

You’ll have a choice of a 10-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. Above the gearbox, you’ll be greeted with a newly designed 12in portrait-style infotainment system, complete with Ford’s SYNC 4 operating system.
Inside this system, Ford’s built a variety of tech advancements, including a dedicated off-road screen that makes use of a 360-degree camera, steering angle assist and a drivetrain mode to assist you on a harsh track. They didn’t explicitly name potholes as an off-road environment, but we’re guessing it’ll come in handy on some most South African roads.
Seeing as this was the global reveal of the new Ranger, we’re yet to find out when these will be available in South Africa, and which variations/trims will be available come 2022.
