Samsung has finally released the publicly available update to its mobile device platform. One UI 4 is based on Google’s Android 12, the world’s leading mobile operating system with nearly 73% market share. The company announced today that the update will only be available to the Galaxy S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra devices for now. Support for older devices, including tablets, is ‘coming soon’.

We first got wind of Android 12 at Google’s I/O event earlier this year in May. In September, we got a potential release date of 4 October, which was still rumoured at the time. That was confirmed earlier this month when the public release of Android 12 dropped.

In previous years, it usually takes a few months from when Google releases the first public build of the new version of Android to when OEMs integrate it into their platforms. This time around things are going a lot quicker.

Samsung proves fourth times the charm

Oppo was first out of the gates on 11 October, with the public beta of ColorOS 12, the companies mobile operating system updated to Android 12. Now Samsung has beaten the time it took previously to get the updated OS to devices. From 3 months down to under two weeks.

It’s worth noting though, that it’s only available for the S21 series, who knows how long owners of older devices will have to wait. Hopefully not too long.
