Here’s Ford’s nostalgia (and electricity)-fuelled EV F-100 Eluminator bakkie concept

Ford F-100

While the top percentile of South Africa’s earners wait patiently for more electric vehicle (EV) options to make their way to the country, they can still admire newcomers in the US from afar. Ford, the company behind one of the most well-known bakkies in the country, has revealed its newest EV concept: the F-100 Eluminator.

Its style is reminiscent of a simpler time, bringing the original 1978 Ford F-100 body shape and colourways along with the nostalgia you’d expect. It’s under the hood that you’ll find something a little less… greasy.

Ford’s e-crate tech

Just because it’s ‘cleaner’, doesn’t mean it doesn’t offer the power you require. It’s fitted with the same motor(s) found in the 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition — a battery-electric powertrain complete with two electric traction motors along the front and rear that manage 480 horsepower in tandem.

This is Ford’s brand new electric crate motor technology — which means that those who are interested may be able to fit these motors into other own EV builds one day. Each of these motors can output 281 horsepower and 317ft. of torque. These will only be available in the US.

“Ford Vehicle Personalization and Ford Performance Parts continue to add new choices for customers, like the Eluminator e-crate motor, as the shift to electric vehicles accelerates. It’s the first of what will become a growing portfolio of performance parts and accessories for Ford electric vehicles,” a press release details.

This’ll start making custom electric builds more accessible among gearheads, which is a nice option to have if you’re keen on the move to cleaner transport in general.

Earlier this year Ford revealed its F-150 Lightning EV concept — that one’s slated to launch in 2022.
