This USB-C hub brings additional ports and storage to your bare laptop

Apple has realised its errors, and will bring ports back to its MacBook lineup soon. But if you bought a notebook in the past few years, there’s a good possibility you’re missing a port that you really actually need. There’s also a good possibility you’re running low on space, because who isn’t?

Enter Satechi’s new USB-C Hybrid Multiport Adapter. It’s a hub that’ll quickly convert your portless, storage-less notebook into a beefy production workhorse.

It’s more than a port

The hub connects via USB-C and adds a fairly robust lineup of holes. This includes an HDMI (4K-output), two USB-C ones and plus two USB-A 3.0 data inputs. Turn your attention to the top of the hub, and you’ll find a removable cover that reveals a spot for an additional SATA M.2 SSD drive that promises speeds of up to 5Gbps.

Nifty, hey? If you’re going to invest in a hub, you might just as well add some extra storage capacity to your machine. It is important to note that the USB-C hub itself costs $90 (around R1,300-ish, depending on the day), and that does not include an SSD drive. So you’ll have to acquire your SSD additionally.

Which isn’t a bad deal if you think about it. You can get a 1TB SSD for around R3,000 depending on the retailer. But if you’re lacking funds, you still have the freedom to upgrade the SSD drive later.

While the Satechi USB-C Hybrid Multiport Adapter is currently available on the company’s e-commerce store, it currently doesn’t to South Africa. It should be obtainable via Amazon’s store soon, but we’ll let you know when it turns up locally too.
