Light Start: Fortnite goes on tour, Apple Watch 6 hard to find, Amazon Fire TV catches up, and Unjected is rejected

Ariana Grande is the latest to headline Fortnite’s Rift Tour

We finally know who will be headlining Fornite’s next Rift Tour: Ariana Grande. If you missed it, Epic announced last week that it would be holding its next virtual Fortnite concert and now they’ve revealed the headliner.

The tour will have five shows and kicks off on 6 August — that’s this Friday — at midnight, and the full schedule is available here. Epic said it would be a good idea to be ready in-game anytime from an hour before the performances, so you’ll be ready to jump into the playlist when it starts 30 minutes before the show.

As for what you’re in for, “Players will be able to travel side by side with their friends on a journey to magical new realities where Fortnite and Ariana collide,” according to Epic. What that means is anyone’s guess. There will, of course, also be in-game cosmetics for sale and attendees can look forward to some freebies.

Apple turns Watch Series 6 titanium edition into unobtainium edition

If you’ve been trying to get your hands on an Apple Watch Series 6 with a titanium case recently then we’re afraid we don’t have good news. As reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the titanium models are currently listed as unavailable in the USA among other major markets both for pickup and delivery.

This surprise comes about two months before the new models are supposedly launching so maybe don’t be too quick to tears or a strongly worded letter. There hasn’t been any official word on the device being discontinued so we’re left to speculate as to the reason. We, like Gurman, think it has probably got something to do with the new models coming soon and the fact that they were sold for $800 — or R11,600, and that’s just a straight conversion. Maybe Apple didn’t think they’d sell too well so they didn’t make too many and now they’re running out. The global chip shortage has probably played its part in this too.

Amazon Fire TV Cube adds Zoom function — the meeting kind

If you’re one of those still working for home, then you might be interested to know that Amazon has finally added Zoom video conferencing functionality to its second-gen Fire TV Cube. Now, if you can get the rest of the family off the TV, you can use the biggest screen in your house for Zoom calls, that’s the idea anyway.

You’ll need to download the Zoom app for Fire TV, you’ll also need a webcam if you need people to see your beautiful (we’re guessing) face. Amazon has some requirements though, it recommends a 1080p webcam that supports USB Video Class (UVC) and warns against using 4K webcams.

Once you’re all connected, you can use the classic “Alexa, join my Zoom meeting” command, or type it in like a pleb on your remote, we won’t judge. It’s also worth noting that, for now, this will only work on second-generation Fire TV Cubes. We can’t help but think this would have been really nice to have last year. The full details on this can be found in Amazon’s blog.

Apple removes dating app ‘Unjected’ from App Store

UnjectedBack to Apple news, now the company has removed a dating app from its App Store. Unjected, a dating app for the unvaccinated, was removed from the App Store on Saturday because it “inappropriately refers to the Covid-19 pandemic in its concept or theme.” The apps owners didn’t like that too much.

According to Business Insider, in a video posted to Instagram that has since been removed, the owners said “Apparently, we’re considered ‘too much’ for sharing our medical autonomy and freedom of choice. So, of course, Apple removed us.”

The app is still available on Google’s Play Store if you want to see what all the fuss is about. It’s got pretty mediocre reviews and a rather small user base compared to other dating apps, which probably doesn’t bode well if you’re out looking for love.
