Nintendo reveals its long-awaited OLED Switch console

Switch

It’s no secret that the Nintendo Switch is one of Stuff‘s favourite gaming consoles – it’s portable, comfortable to use on public transport (and at the office), and has a stellar lineup of games. It just… hasn’t seen a proper upgrade since it turned up. Now Nintendo has announced the Nintendo Switch OLED version, ready to launch on 8 October 2021.

“The new system features a vibrant 7-inch OLED screen, a wide adjustable stand, a dock with a wired LAN port, 64 GB of internal storage, and enhanced audio,” the reveal web page reads. That means you get all the portability of the old console, with a brighter, larger display boasting those deep blacks you only get from OLED.

Switch it up

The old Switch (that’s the official name now) is fitted with a 6.2in LCD Screen that caps out at 1280 x 720p resolution. While that’s… fine, most smartphones feature higher display resolutions. When it comes to gaming the visual element is kinda essential, so a display upgrade’s long overdue in this case.

The OLED console comes in a new white colour option, and will retail for $350 according to the reveal web page — that’s around R5,000 at a direct conversion at the time of writing. Expect to pay more than the old Switch model come launch in South Africa. We’ll let you know as soon as Nintendo SA confirms when that will be.
