After many years of collaboration and PlayStation exclusives, Sony Interactive Entertainment has bought Finish game developer Housemarque after the success of Returnal.
In an interview with GQ, Housemarque’s co-founder and managing director Ilari Kuittinen said, “Let’s face it, these are some of the best game developers in the world. So we’re really proud to be part of that group and hope to collaborate and learn from them.”
Sony’s sales surely soar
This is the second acquisition Sony has made in the last couple of years following the purchase of Insomniac Games in 2019. That proved to work out well for Sony as Insomniac went on to release two successful titles for the PS5 launch, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Housemarque and Sony’s relationship first started in 2007 with the fairly successful release of Super Stardust HD on the PS3. Since then, the Finish studio has released Dead Nation, Resogun, Alienation, Nex Machina, Matterfall and Returnal all exclusives for PlayStation.
The future for Housemarque games is looking good. Playstation Studios head Hermen Hulst also seems to think so, “We’ll be able to take the limitations away and to get Ilari, Harri Tikkanen [co-founder and creative director] and all the core team to focus exclusively on making amazing games. I think this is going to help them grow even further and it will be great for the quality and ambitions.”
We were big fans of Returnal so if this purchase means there’ll be more quality games like that, we’re on board.
