Lenovo created a ‘wireless’ laptop charger

You, me and Lenovo all know how the saying goes: less is more. And that’s certainly true when it comes to wires and cables. Particularly now that we’re so dependent on them. So Lenovo has come up with a ‘wireless’ laptop charging solution.

Lenovo, no strings (or wires) attached, sort of

The tech-maker calls its charger the ‘Go Wireless Charging Kit’. You can slap it on to a variety of laptops to enable wireless charging on them. The kit is made up of two pieces of gear: a 3.2mm-thick metal charging mat, and a wireless receiver that you connect to your laptop. Here’s how it works.

First, you plug the charging mat into the wall, most presumably at your desk. Then you attach the receiver to your laptop if it has a USB-C port. You can then plonk your laptop down onto the mat and it’ll begin charging. Lenovo says the Go Charging Kit can charge up most 13in and 14in laptops at 45W to 60W.

Now, here’s the thing — While it is literally wireless, it’s not wireless in the ways that anyone’s really hoping for. Wireless like Xiaomi’s AirCharge or Oppo’s version. When we picture modern, wireless charging we imagine walking into a room and feeling your phone ding in your pocket with a “now charging” notification. What the Go Charging Kit effectively does is, and even Lenovo knows it, “eliminates the need to disconnect and reconnect a power chord”.

And that’s about it. Surely somebody will find it fairly useful, but it’s not quite tech that’s going to set the world on fire. Our true air-charging dreams remain dreams for now.

The Lenovo Go Wireless Charging Kit falls in line with a number of other new ‘Go’ products, including wireless headphone, mice, and keyboards.
