Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 reveal ticks closer – here’s what we know

Samsung

There are many different rumours circulating about Samsung’s new smartwatch offerings. All of them will either be confirmed or denied at the company’s online-only event on 28 June at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2021, if they don’t let the cat out of the bag the day before.

If Samsung sticks to their current naming convention then we should be hearing more about the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4 at MWC, alongside the rumoured three high-end devices the company is expected to announce: the Galaxy S21 FE (assuming chip shortages don’t cook its goose), Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3.

Samsung says ‘watch this space’

During Google I/O last month the company showed off its new and improved ‘Wear’ (this may not be the final name), a collaboration between Google’s Wear OS and Tizen, the platform powering their wearables for ages.

The new platform will feature faster startup time for apps, improved battery life for devices, and greater support for third-party apps including the ability to add custom UI over the stock Wear platform. Google apps like Google Fit, a standalone Google Maps app, Google Pay, YouTube Music, Google Assistant, and the Fitbit app (because Google owns them too) will also receive updates.

The other rumoured specs for the Samsung wearables include a Super AMOLED display (this is a given, since Samsung makes them), a new 5nm Exynos SOC, an IP68 rating and a 247mAh battery, depending on what size you’re looking at.

This collaboration could be just what Samsung needs to regain some ground over Apple as they vie for the throne of the Wearable King. Apple’s winning, so far.
