There are many things that a competent writer could do with a universe as vast and rich as Westeros. As it turns out, turning the events that led up to the iconic Game of Thrones story into a Broadway production is one such avenue worth exploring. A report from The Hollywood Reporter indicates that a theatrical adaption of author George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy world is in the works and honestly, it makes perfect sense. The intensity and drama of that world works beautifully on screen but on stage it has the potential to be theatre!
If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones then you might want to plan a trip out to Broadway for 2023 (the year the play is expected to begin performances). The actual story will be set 16 years prior to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire book series and will be set during The Great Tourney of Harrenhal. Without going into spoilers for those who might still be delving into the series, the events that occur at the Tourney have a rather important impact on the overarching narrative of Game of Thrones. So if there was ever a story to adapt for the stage, this is it.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, author of the series George R.R. Martin said, “Few in Westeros knew the carnage to come when highborn and smallfolk alike gathered at Harrenhal to watch the finest knights of the realm compete in a great tourney, during the Year of the False Spring. It is a tourney oft referred during HBO’s Game of Thrones, and in my novels, A Song of Ice and Fire … and now, at last, we can tell the whole story… on the stage.”
Martin is involved in the production of the play alongside notable playwright Duncan Macmillan. Martin is an incredibly busy individual as he’s also working on a slew of other TV shows for HBO all based in the A Song of Ice and Fire universe. So if you’re a fan, you have a lot to look forward to.
