Dropbox to get free password manager in April

Dropbox

Now that LastPass is changing its business model, many folks are currently in the market for a new password manager. Seeing an opportunity present itself, Dropbox has reared its head and promised to fill the gap with a free password manager. You might be thinking to yourself, “Wait, hasn’t Dropbox always had a password manager?” You’d be correct in thinking that, but that particular feature was reserved for premium members. Come April, Dropbox is making its password manager available for free users, with a slight catch.

If you take advantage of the cloud storage app’s newfound generosity, you’ll be limited to 50 passwords. If you have more than that, you’ll need to fork out for a premium subscription, which just sounds like an effective way to rope customers into a potential upsell in the future if you ask us.

Drop it for Dropbox

It’s actually a smart move by Dropbox as people have become more than a little annoyed with LastPass since it took the feature which allowed it to sync to an account across different devices and hid it behind a paywall. Dropbox Passwords will allow users to sync their passwords across three different devices for free. All you need to do is install a browser extension or download the desktop app to stash those (50) passwords away from prying eyes.

So if you’re in need of a place to stash your secret words and aren’t willing to shell out for a premium membership to LastPass, you might find some refuge in Dropbox Passwords. Given how many different services require a password these days… well, the jury’s out on how long the free version will last you.
