Finally, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies will be available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

If you’re not taking a weekend out of every year to watch The Lord of the Rings trilogy, what are you even doing with your life? We don’t need to explain to you how incredibly important those films are, because odds are you’re already very familiar with them. Who isn’t at this point? From the sweeping visuals, incredible set design, monumental soundtrack and some… well, let’s be generous and say “hit-or-miss” acting, Peter Jackson’s adaption of JRR Tolkien’s fantasy epic stands the test of time as one of film’s crowing achievements. So it’s only right that Warner Bros finally got around to releasing them as a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray boxset.

Oh, and they’ve done the same thing for The Hobbit Trilogy but no-one really cares about that, do they? Let’s focus more on The Lord of the Rings, that’s all we actually want, honestly.

My precious…

Announced by Sean Astin, who played the real hero of The Lord of the Rings (Samwise Gamgee), the remastering of the trilogy, which comes a year before The Fellowship of the Ring turns twenty years old, was overseen by Peter Jackson himself. “Now, because it’s in 4K UHD you know it’s going to be the most incredible home-viewing experience possible,” said Astin via fan site TheOneRing. While Blu-ray versions of The Lord of the Rings are already available, these boxsets will be the first to upscale the original footage to a 4K resolution.

The boxsets for both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit come with both the theatrical cuts of the films as well as the (superior) directors cuts. They’re currently available for pre-order on sites like Amazon, with a launch on 1 December, but we’ve yet to receive anything locally. Local stores will no doubt get stock closer to release date so we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
