The national satellite TV service, DStv, has decided to open a few channels to stream for free on its digital platform DStv Now. The best part? You don’t even need to be a subscriber to access the free content.
There is a catch though — all the channels DStv decided to make available are news channels. Now, before someone calls ‘boooring’ from the back, get this. Making these channels available is done in a bid to keep people informed about the current coronavirus outbreak. The best information is free information.
Along with BBC World, CNN, eNCA, SABC News, Newzroom Afrika and Euronews Now, The platform has other free content available. Bet you didn’t know that Channel O, PBS for the kids, SuperSport Play and TBN are all available to check out free of charge. Yes, no sub required.
DStv says that it is already seeing the effects of the virus on the entertainment sector, especially sport. “Many sporting disciplines including football, motorsport, rugby and tennis, have had events either postponed or cancelled by their respective sporting federations. In this instance, as a broadcaster, we are subject to their decisions. As a result, we have plans in place that will keep you well entertained. This includes the best live sport available, as well as celebrating some of the classic sporting moments and documentaries. We will also continue to bring you the very best series, kids entertainment and movies,” the service states.
To sign up to the free DStv Now service, sign up on the website, create an account, then you’ll be prompted to provide your ID, smartcard or customer number. If you’re not subscribed to DStv, just skip this step. There are apps for both Android and iOS, so if you’re on mobile, make sure to download ‘em.
