Twitter has decided it’s time to take out the trash, and will remove all inactive accounts from 11 December of this year. If you haven’t used your Twitter account in the last six months, better check your mails, bud.
The social network has started sending out emails to anyone who owns an inactive account. To qualify as an inactive account, a user must’ve forgotten about the account for at least six months. If the user logs into the account before the deadline of 11 December, however, they’ll be in the clear.

This mass purging won’t happen in one day though — a Twitter spokesperson said that the closures will take place over “many months”. But once the inactive accounts are removed, those usernames will become available once again. The clean-up is part of an effort to be more credible, and present more accurate information, apparently. We’re not very clear on Twitter’s meaning there, but at least you’ll be able to find actual people when you search for profiles, and not inactive accounts from 2009.
It looks like this purging will include the accounts of people who have passed away, which may pose a problem for their loved ones. Twitter said to The Verge in a statement, that “We do not currently have a way to memorialize someone’s Twitter account once they have passed on, but the team is thinking about ways to do this.”
Basically, if you’ve kinda forgotten about Twitter but you’re holy about your username (like, if it’s your gamertag or business name), make sure to log in to Twitter before the deadline.
