Let the Game begin. Again. HBO confirms Game of Thrones prequel, like winter, is coming

Those of you suffering from Game of Thrones withdrawal after the Song of Fire and Ice series ended earlier this year can rejoice. There’s hope on the horizon… for viewers, anyway. The cast of newly-confirmed GoT prequel series House of the Dragon may find themselves a little more nervous instead.

HBO has confirmed that the prequel series has been ordered and will air on the (also newly-announced) new HBO Max service. The series will be based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, which deals with the history of the Targaryen family. How that story concludes is something we know (since we’ve all watched Season One or read the first book) but Martin hasn’t finished this story yet either. Just sayin’.

George R.R. Martin is on-board as an executive producer alongside Colony creator Ryan Condal and GoT director Miguel Sapochnik. Condal and Sapochnik will co-run the new series. This follows the news that HBO scrapped a (different) Game of Thrones prequel that dealt with the first human encounters with the White Walkers.

T the series will, largely, be focused on the Targaryen family, from the Doom of Valeria to the Dance of Dragons. If we’re really lucky (and the show goes on long enough/George finishes writing), we might even see Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon turn up at the Battle of the Trident. It’d be nice to see Sean Bean again — even if this time we know for sure he dies in the end.

We’re not sure when House of the Dragon will air but since it’s showing up on HBO Max, don’t expect it before the service’s May 2020 launch.
