Telkom’s VS Gaming partners with Comic Con Africa to bring some esports goodness to the Con

This year’s Comic Con Africa is gearing up to be a spectacle and 2019’s event has a lot of game. Just like last year, Reed Exhibitions (the guys and girls behind Comic-Con), have partnered with the Telkom VS Gaming league. The newly-announced partnership will bring two esports tournaments to the con, both of which will prove impressive af.

The two Masters tournaments will include a DOTA2 league and a CS:GO league. Both will feature some of the best players in the local scene and should draw crowds of esports-lovers to watch. Or compete, if they’ve got the skill. In 2018, the Comic-Con/VS Gaming partnership brought 16 pro teams to compete across two events. The competitions also drew thousands of spectators — something we’re bound to see happen this year.

Ready up, folks

As far as local esports go, the leagues will apparently offer one of the largest prize pools we’ve seen in SA. We don’t know what the actual amount is right now, but we might just take up jamming CS:GO competitively. Just in case. It’s easy, right?

“Last year’s Comic Con Africa was such a huge success due to the incredible partnerships we had, and we are thrilled that Telkom VS Gaming has once again come on board to support us. Gaming is a massive focus for Comic-Con Africa and we saw the success last year of combining pop culture and esports. This opens esports up to an even wider audience that attends Comic Con Africa,” says Carol Weaving, the managing director of Reed Exhibitions.

Not ready for the competitive scene? Comic Con Africa will offer ‘free play zones’ scattered across the convention. It’ll also host its own, smaller comps over the weekend. “Comic Con Africa gamers will be able to enjoy playing Overwatch, League of Legends, Apex Legends, Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizione, F1 2018 and more. Splatoon, Labo VR, Mario Kart and Ultimate Dance are in the mix along with international competitions and locally developed arcade games,” the press release reads.

Comic Con Africa will run from 21 September to 24 September at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand. Oh, you don’t have tickets yet? We can help with that…
