Last week Netflix dropped its AirPlay compatibility due to “technical limitations”, which means Apple users won’t be able to beam Netflix shows from their iPhone or iPad to their Apple TV. But why, Netflix?
One of the most convenient Netflix features for Apple users has suddenly gone, after a comfortable six year relationship. Many are unhappy. Not quite distraught, but unhappy. Now users have to download the Netflix app on their Apple TVs? What a drag…
Excuses, excuses…
Netflix has issued a statement of sorts, saying that they’ve run into “technical limitations”. A Netflix spokesperson said that “With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn’t a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn’t) or certify these experiences. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met.”
Essentially, Netflix blames Apple’s newly formed partnership with major TV makers integrating AirPlay2 into their newer smart TVs for the inconvenience.
On the other hand, we know that Apple has teamed up with big names in television to launch its own streaming service. Apple TV+ will feature the company’s own original content, including a couple of doccies directed by Oprah… Yeah, that’s a thing.
It’s hard to believe that Netflix doesn’t have the technical capability to work with TV manufacturers and Apple to find a solution. Or maybe they don’t want to find a solution… particularly since Apple will soon be a direct competitor in the streaming space.
