Alienware announces 17in gaming notebook at CES

Dell Alienware m17 (R1) non-touch gaming notebook computer, codename Orion 17.

Alienware, the gaming brand developed by Dell, have announced their thinnest, lightest gaming notebook yet. And this one’s coming to South Africa in just a few weeks time.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019, Dell and Alienware decided to give consumers what they want — an affordable, lightweight gaming machine. A machine that appeals to both amateur gamers as well as pros. And this machine is called the Alienware m17.

Pathway to Paradise

The 17in gaming notebook weighs 2.6kg, while remaining powerful enough to handle demanding gaming. It’s powered by 8th-gen Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, and those with an unlimited budget can even opt for Intel’s unlocked i9 K range. These processors conveniently feature dynamic CPU overclocking thanks to Alienware’s bespoke Cryo-Tech Cooling tech, as well as their built-in Command Centre.

And the graphics card, oh the graphics card — you’ll be happy to know the m17 notebook is fitted with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 Series GPUs that were recently announced too. The 20 Series cards are designed for notebooks and deliver high performance with real-time ray-tracing and AI capabilities. We’re not so sure about needing the AI (yet) but we’ll take the ray-tracing with a smile.

Then, if you’re not familiar with the Alienware Command Center yet — you might have seen this sort of feature from the likes of Asus and MSI before. It’s a hub that allows gamers to customise things like peripheral lighting, power management, thermal control, overclocking and audio.  Alienware users will now be able to overclock their GPUs as well as CPUs at the system level directly from the Command Centre.

Pricing for these machines have not been announced as of yet, but the Alienware m17 will be available in South Africa from 1 February 2019. We’ll update once we have word on local pricing and locally available configurations.
