It’s about bloody time! One of our only complaints about the PlayStation 4 was that it couldn’t hold a candle to the PlayStation 3 in terms of media playback. That’s all changed.
Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 4 is getting its very own media player, via an update that should already have downloaded to your console if you’re the type to leave it turned on and connected to the internet.
In terms of actual capabilities, Sony have announced that the PS4 will be able to play video, MP3 and image slideshows – very like the PS3, then. But then you take a look at the supported file formats for video playback…
Sony says that the PS4 will support MKV, AVI, MP4 and MPEG-2 TS – all of the popular formats nowadays. MP3, AAC and AC-3 (the latter for video only) are the supported audio formats for the media player update and if you absolutely must have your photos – JPG, BMP and PNG are your formats there.
Users will be able to stream content to the PS4 over a network or scoop content off a USB drive plugged into the front of the console. Time for a few network twiddles for us, then. About time too.
