The recent Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer excited some Star Wars fans, disappointed and upset others but pretty much everyone was caught off-guard by a new type of lightsaber which features a crossguard made from the same energy that the traditional beam is made out of.
Is it practical? Masochism, is that the answer? Or does a Sith need to live in so much danger that they would willingly risk slicing a hand off every time they use the thing just to maintain adrenaline levels? (Jason Statham, is that you under the hood?) Either way, someone has already made a replica of the possibly-practical-but-definitely-awesome-looking crossguard lightsaber using a 3D printer.

If you happen to own a 3D printer, the folks over at Le FabShop have done all the work already. You can download the plans for a customisable crossguard lightsaber over at Thingiverse right now and have it all printed out before the film is even released. If you’re a traditionalist, you can use the same plans to make something a little more… classic if you like.
