SanDisk has announced something bigger in the world of microSD cards at Mobile World Congress – a microSDXC card with a 128GB capacity. The monster mini-card is designed for use in Android smartphones and tablets, according to the company, and has been dubbed the world’s highest capacity card of its type. Let’s be honest here, that’s a lot of storage in a very small space.
SanDisk points out that, in less than ten years, microSD storage capacities have increased a thousand-fold. The company says that the current capacity has been made possible by a proprietary manufacturing process that “…allows for 16 memory die to be vertically stacked, each shaved to be thinner than a strand of hair.”
Strategy Analytics’ Stuart Robinson said in a media statement “Until now, consumers had to spread out their content between multiple products because the memory on those devices was not able to hold enough data in one place. This 128GB microSD card is going to be popular as the preferred removable storage option, giving users fast, secure and reliable access to their personal data archives.”
Availability of the 128GB microSD hasn’t been announced locally but it has been priced for the US, giving us some idea of what it will cost when it makes landfall in South Africa. The 128GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card will carry a recommended price of $200 in the States, which translates to R2,160 at the present rate of exchange.
