3D printing has given the world all sorts of home-made products and is set to give the world a lot more. One man in particular might wind up with the car of his dreams, if his plans to create a 3D printed replica of an 1961 Aston Martin DB4 pan out.

Ivan Sentch from New Zealand has decided to make his very own Aston Martin DB4, using a 3D printer, a wooden frame and a lot of patience. The 3D printer that the Auckland man is using can only make 105mm x 105mm sections of the vehicle at any one time so he’s constructing it bit by bit in preparation for taking a mold of the constructed body. This mold will eventually form the final product.

Sentch explains on his website that “I should point out that is just the printing; there will be endless months of work once it’s all assembled before I can take a mold – applying auto filler, sanding, repeat until it’s all true then sanding from 400 to 600 to 1000 grit sand paper until it has a glassy finish then applying mold prep and sanding with 1000 again.”

Once all of this has been completed he’ll still have to source and construct the car’s interior and the actual mechanical parts, which will be cribbed from a 1993 Nissan Skyline GTS. At the moment his project is slightly stalled thanks to a broken component on his printer but the bodywork is 72% done, more or less. Then, the real work begins.
