Square Enix, in a blog post written by company CEO Phil Rogers, has confirmed that there is a sequel to this year’s very well received Tomb Raider reboot “well into development”.
Several other games were also confirmed to be in development, including Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III. Rogers’ post was in response to speculation that Square Enix as a publisher would be “abandoning core, triple-A console and PC games”.
The Tomb Raider reboot, developed by Crystal Dynamics, told the origin story of one of gaming’s most iconic characters, Lara Croft. The end of the game, for the six people who didn’t play it, left little doubt that a sequel would be forthcoming.
Former Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher, now heading up product development and studios for Square Enix, said to gaming website Joystiq that “It’s still early days, so I’m afraid I can’t provide any further details for now save my assurance that we’re not resting on our laurels and acclaim from Tomb Raider’s recent successes, but working hard to raise the bar even higher and re-affirm the faith you’ve shown.”
