YouTube and Virgin America have entered into a partnership that will see Google’s video-sharing service providing a portion of Virgin America’s in-flight entertainment to passengers flying within the US and Mexico.
Shows from YouTube partners will be available on the airline by mid-December, according to a blog post from YouTube.
A portion of the post reads “Bringing YouTube aboard Virgin America is part of a larger effort to bring you more of the videos you love, at heights you’ve never seen them before. Sample these great series on your flight, and then visit YouTube to enjoy the full seasons.”
YouTube is obviously looking to promote its original content with America audiences and possibly add Virgin’s passengers to a base of fans on the ground. How effective this partnership is going to be for YouTube remains to be seem but anything that provides additional in-flight distraction choices can only be a good thing for passengers. Should it work out for the video-sharing service as well, more airlines might be next to feature the content.
