Google-based startup Niantic Labs is working on an augmented reality game designed for smartphones. The game, titled Ingress, is in closed beta at the moment and involves getting those who are playing the game out into the real world to interact with fictional sources of energy.
There will be two factions to choose for this Android game, either the Resistance or the Enlightened. The two groups seek to preserve our humanity or exploit the power of these sources of energy respectively and, based on the trailer below, the concept for this AR game could prove quite impressive.
Niantic’s description of the game, taken from Google’s Play store, hints at something very unusual on the horizon for mobile gaming.
A mysterious energy has been unearthed by a team of scientists in Europe. The origin and purpose of this force is unknown, but some researchers believe it is influencing the way we think. We must control it or it will control us.
Move through the real world using your Android device and the Ingress app to discover and tap sources of this mysterious energy. Acquire objects to aid in your quest, deploy tech to capture territory, and ally with other players to advance the cause of the Enlightened or the Resistance.”
