A company called Terrafugia has got designs on a car/airplane hybrid and has recently completed a successful test flight for the production prototype they call the Transition Street-Legal Airplane.
The vehicle, a “…two seat personal aircraft capable of driving on roads and highways, parking in a single car garage, and flying with unleaded automotive fuel”, will be undergoing further testing in the run up to the the first delivery, which the company expects to happen some time within the next year. The test flight, which was completed on 23 March this year, lasted for 8 minutes and took the Light Sports Aircraft to a height of 1,400 feet. It will apparently undergo another six phases of flight testing before it is ready to ship.
Terrafugia Chief Test Pilot Phil Meteer said, “It’s a remarkable vehicle both on the road and, now, in the air. When I drove it into the shop, literally from the road through the garage door, I was amazed that I had just flown it at Plattsburgh a few days before. A long-overdue mode of transportation and fun is just around the corner.”
