Hollywood director James Cameron has become the first person to complete a solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, to an area known as “Challenger Deep.” Cameron completed the 7-mile (11.25km) dive yesterday in the Deepsea Challenger submersible.
The dive was made for the first time in 52 years and although Cameron had no company on his trip he did not go alone. The submersible was armed with several 3D cameras, an 8 foot LED light and instruments for collecting samples from the ocean’s bottom. Cameron remained on the ocean floor for around 3 hours before returning to the surface.
The joint expedition by Cameron, National Geographic and Rolex was intended to “…conduct deep-ocean research and exploration.” Cameron, of course, came back with images and videos in addition to research samples.
