We’re all used to seeing new features for cellular phones but Sharp has come up with something else entirely. The company is releasing its Pantone series of handsets in Japan and one of the listed features is the ability to detect radiation.
The Android 4.0 phones will be able to detect between .005 and 9.99 μSv/h of radiation, though the company points out that the function is “non-compliant” with Japanese standards. Presumably the market for the phone will be restricted to Japan since there doesn’t appear to be much call for it anywhere except perhaps Chernobyl.
More conventional features for Sharp’s Pantone include 4 and 0.3 megapixel front and rear cameras, a 854 x 480 display and the unit will be dust and waterproof. It will ship in eight available colours but pricing for the Geiger-counter-like phone has yet to be made public.
