You'll often catch me dreaming of a Wind Waker remaster. Or sleeping. One of the two.

Back in 2019, Vodacom set out to a Mpumalanga town called Wakkerstroom in order to connect its residents using 3G and 4G. Wakkerstroom is a small town known for its farming, with its citizens placing a heavy reliance on the industry. Vodacom’s plan was to give the entire population – just over 1,400 people – a bunch of 3G- and 4G-enabled devices. Plus the connectivity to make use of them. The project was initiated with BPG Langfontein, a farm company in the town. Most of Wakkerstroom relies on BPG Langfontein as a source of food and of work. But with…

One of the biggest names in the video game industry, EA Sports FIFA has officially ended its partnership with the football conglomerate of the same name. That isn’t to say EA isn’t making football games anymore, future titles will just be needing a new name. The new official title as stated by EA will be known as EA Sports FC. The sad thing is, that’s probably the best name they could come up with. Let’s not go too hard on them. The news isn’t exactly surprising since EA was already discussing the possibility of ending their partnership back in October…

Imagine, for a moment, that you could play Halo Infinite without the need for a computer or Xbox? Well, Microsoft may be thinking along those same lines. Reports claim that Microsoft will release a streaming device that will allow players to access the Game Pass Ultimate library, along with movies and TV services. The device will apparently be similar to either Amazon’s Fire Stick or will arrive in a small box shape. So a Chromecast for video games, basically. This means all you’d need is a TV with a working HDMI port, a more-than-decent internet connection, a subscription to Xbox…

According to the Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA), South Africans may get new driver’s licences next year. The DLCA is responsible for the production of South Africa’s drivers’ licences. The announcement was made during the DLCA’s latest annual performance plan. At the same presentation, it was shown that the new cards will feature a new design, along with extra security features. The DLCA want to use its new licences as an opportunity to ‘re-engineer the process’.…

It feels like every other day robots are given more and more high-profile jobs around the world. South Africa is no different. Netcare Pretoria East Hospital is using robotic technology to assist its doctors with knee and hip replacements. Robotic surgeons are a thing in South Africa now. More or less. The Mako robotic system, made by a company called Stryker, began its work in the Netcare Pretoria East Hospital. Dr. Wian van der Merwe performed the first robotically assisted hip and knee surgeries in November last year. Since then, the procedure has become more widely available to residents of South…

Today, South Africa welcomes the world’s largest hydrogen-powered truck as it begins work in a platinum mine. The project – named nuGen – aims to relieve the mine’s current fleet of 40 diesel-powered trucks. Each diesel-powered truck uses around 1 million litres of diesel each year. Can you hear the planet shouting its thanks? The mine in question is the Anglo American-owned Mogalakwena mine. The new hydrogen-powered truck will get its power from an on-site solar-powered hydrogen electrolyser. This machine splits water molecules, sending the resulting hydrogen to the truck. Unlike its diesel counterparts, this truck won’t create any harmful…

The standard model, which comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB ROM, will set you back R11,700. If you’ve got a mid-range sized budget to play with, this one might be worth considering. Dressed to impress Before we get into…

Have you ever imagined a store where you can walk in, grab something and just leave? If you have, you’re either really invested in the future of shopping in South Africa, or you’re a thief. We’re hoping it’s the former. Shoprite has also been thinking about the future of shopping and has begun using AI and machine learning in their stores. The idea behind it is simple – Shoprite wants to help solve the ever-growing problem of food waste. Not a Skynet When people think of AI and machine learning, they often imagine scenarios where robots take over. Fortunately, Shoprite’s…
