I've been writing about tech and games for around 20 years. Been playing games since I was tall enough to reach the controls on an arcade machine. Old enough to remember when games weren't something people yelled at each other about.

In news that will likely have retro gamers wailing and gnashing their teeth, Sony has announced it is closing down the digital stores for the PS3, PS Vita and PSP. So if you own one of these platforms and you feel there are some games remaining outside your library, you now have a limited time to pick them up. Once these stores close, they’re closed for good. This rather bad news comes via Sony’s official blog, in which it states that the digital stores for the PS3 and PSP consoles will close on the 2nd of July this year. Vita…

As redundant as is sounds to say it, video games have come a long way as a story-telling medium. Once upon a time game narratives were simply ‘get the girl and kill the baddies’. Then came space operas, comedies, dramas, fantasy epics, horror stories and more; video games can now tap into the need us humans have for a good yarn across myriad genres. Some take their cues from cinema classics. Some ape the format of high-end TV shows. Some of them have even riffed on classic literature like Heart Of Darkness, Atlas Shrugged and Dante’s Inferno. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvtZVzQe8GY This has…

A couple of days ago, Twitter put out a survey. The question being whether or not someone should have to observe its terms and conditions with regards to posting, even if they happen to be a world leader. As Silicon Valley missives go, this was hard to swallow. Think about this for a second; you sign up to use a social media platform and you agree to a certain set of terms and conditions (which hardly any of us bother to read) on the understanding that if you violate them, you get chucked off. Fair enough. It’s kind of like…

Donald Trump is planning a comeback to social media, according to his former adviser, Jason Miller. In an interview with Fox News, Miller said that ‘The Don’ will make an appearance back on social media in the next few months, will his own platform, which Miller has billed as “the hottest ticket in social media”. “I do think that we’re going to see President Trump returning to social media in probably about two or three months,” Miller said. Donald Trump’s return Trump was kicked off Facebook and Twitter at the beginning of the year after protests against the results of…

Still with us? Great! Don’t worry, Stuff hasn’t suddenly turned into a sports news site. No, we’re interested in the tech that DStv and SuperSport are breaking out to mark the occasion. You’d think that a year in which millions of people had been legally obliged to stay indoors thanks to a pandemic, while relying on Big Tech to do their jobs, would be the most planet-changing year you could expect. You’d be wrong. While billions of folk around the globe had to stay indoors, observe social distancing and accept a facemask as much of a regular part of outdoor apparel as say, a pair of pants, 2021 has rolled in with the same set of rules for the rank and file. This year, though, it seems humankind has woken up to…

If you’re not in any way interested in football – or ‘soccer’ as some would have it – it’s likely you’re not really a regular player of EA Sports’s annual behemoth, FIFA. In that case, one of the biggest scandals in gaming may have just passed you by… and who doesn’t like reading about a good scandal? First, a bit of background. If you have even a passing interest in video games, you’ll know that each FIFA release is a massive money-maker for EA. The reason being is that, beyond the point of sale, every FIFA game since FIFA 10…

Watch Dogs: Legion’s multiplayer has had a bumpy road on the way to release. Delayed a couple of times, it finally dropped this month to little fanfare – previews weren’t exactly promising that it would set the world on fire, but they weren’t overwhelmingly negative either. However, if Ubisoft hopes the game’s online component will drag players back to it, it’s in for an uphill battle. The problem with WD:L’s online mode is the same problem that faced the online modes of its predecessors in that it seems a little superfluous. Unlike the multiplayer modes of a dozen other franchises…

The taskforce has been initiated the USA’s national security council. The move comes after cybersecurity journalists Brian Krebs and Andy Greenberg reported on Friday that…

As we mentioned when the demo was announced last week, Outriders has a lot to live up to. The bar set by its developer People Can Fly is pretty damn high given its past releases, and as a taster for the first game this studio is releasing through Square Enix on this generation of consoles, the Outriders demo staggers into view with a veritable tonne of expectations on its back. And for the first twenty minutes, its demo is distinctly underwhelming. Before we delve into the overall experience, it’s worth laying out the tidbits that have been revealed about the game’s story.…
