Ever had a brand new phone that you were afraid to touch because its replacement value was so high? That’s a feeling that almost everyone encounters at some point but it’s not normal for the Stuff team to worry about how much a phone costs. Call us jaded if you like but we really have seen almost everything that tech has to offer the average user in South Africa. BBM for Android and iOS finally became available this week after a bit of a false start in September and BlackBerry have released some of the stats revolving around the messaging program’s jump to other platforms. According to BlackBerry, the first 24 hours of availability for Android and iOS saw the company’s messaging service secure more than 10 million downloads. How this was split between Apple and Google’s operating systems wasn’t mentioned but BlackBerry did point out that the Google Play edition of the app has been getting a large number of positive reviews from users. In a statement Andrew…

Following a September launch attempt that didn’t pan out too well for BlackBerry, the company has decided to take its second crack at releasing the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) app for Android and iOS. In an official blog post from BlackBerry the company said that “…people will start seeing BBM in Google Play, the App Store and in select Samsung App Stores.” By the look of things the rollout is being staggered a little and it looks as though South African users won’t be able to access the Android or iOS versions until this weekend, according to the blog post. HTC might be joining the likes of Sony, Samsung and very possibly Apple (if they announce something along these lines later today) in producing and making available a smartwatch, according to a report from Bloomberg. The report, which cites anonymous sources for its information, claims that HTC will have a smartwatch available “…by the second half of 2014” but doesn’t go in to many specifics. This is reportedly because items like the pricing and functionality have yet to finalised. What is apparently known is that HTC’s smartwatch will be able to take photographs and that it will use an Android…

Nokia’s Nokia World event has come and gone, bringing with it several product announcements for the Asha lineup of products, two new 6-inch Lumia handsets in the form of the 1520 and 1320 and then the big one: Nokia’s first 10.1-inch tablet – the Lumia 2520. Most of the announcements were not completely unexpected but we’ve been afforded a closer look at Nokia’s first tablet at last. The Lumia 2520 features a 10.1-inch, 1,920 x 1,080 display seated inside a shell that looks like a Windows Phone handset writ large and dropped on its side. At its core is a…

Nokia’s Lumia 2520 tablet isn’t the only thing to spring forth from the company’s Abu Dhabi event which took place earlier today. Two new Lumia handsets, the Lumia 1520 and the Lumia 1320, are also going to be following the Lumia 2520’s launch sequence by appearing in the States and China before the end of the year. The Lumia 1520 is a smartphone in every sense of the word, sporting the same processor as LG’s G2 and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3. That’d be the Snapdragon 800, running at 2.26GHz, and Nokia have opted to pair it with a 6-inch 1080p…

Apple’s new iPad has been unveiled and it offers a fairly substantial redesign over the older models of the tablet. Dubbed the iPad Air, the new tablet features the same processor and co-processor found in the new iPhone 5s (Apple’s 64-bit A7 CPU and the M7 co-processor). The display for the tablet remains unchanged, being a 9.7-inch Retina affair, but Apple have scaled down the dimensions just about everywhere else. The iPad Air is claimed to be 20% thinner than previous models of iPad, measuring just 7.5mm thick, and it weighs in at just 460 grams or so. The Air…

Apple seems to be having a decent time of keeping tomorrow’s revelations locked down (so far) but Nokia’s Nokia World event, also set to take place tomorrow, is having a tougher time of it. Details of the rumoured Lumia 1520 from Nokia seem to have popped up on Tmall, an official Chinese Nokia online store. There are no images in evidence for the handset but the specifications listed line up with details seen in previous rumours of the larger Lumia. Engadget reports that the 6-inch 1080p diplay is confirmed by the listing but the information available on the page at…
