Last night, we were treated to the latest marketing material for EA’s Battlefield 2042. If you weren’t already excited and didn’t already have the release (22 October) date circled on your calendar, this might be what you need. DICE has made it clear, from the initial announcement and every subsequent viewing, that players won’t be getting a single-player campaign this year. The company has instead chosen to focus on the multiplayer aspect and wants to give players a healthy selection for that. This will include the usual game modes we’ve seen in previous titles, to the all-new Battlefield Portal game mode that will let players customise…

According to a recent Kotaku report, three early Grand Theft Auto (GTA) games will be getting the remaster-treatment. We could even see them before the end of the year on pretty much every platform available, why leave out a potential revenue stream? This report follows rumours around the project showing up all over the internet on Reddit, Twitter and a few other message boards, including The Message Board That Shall Not Be Named. Almost as if it knew it was fuelling the rumour fires, Take-Two Interactive — parent company of Rockstar — went on a DMCA spree ordering the removal of GTA mods using…

A few weeks ago, we reported that evidence was found showing Android was working on a WhatsApp update to Google’s Data Migration Tool. It’s the tool that’s used by the setup wizard when switching to a new Android device. Although it was pretty clear this was a certainty, we hadn’t had any official confirmation… until last night. At Samsung’s Unpacked event, the company revealed its new range of foldable smartphones and the new Watch series, but it didn’t stop there. Samsung also showed off that users switching from iOS to Android, specifically its new Galaxy Z series phones, will be able to, almost…

Samsung’s Unpacked event has confirmed its next wearable, the Samsung Watch 4 series. Although this definitely does not come as a surprise thanks to the copious leaks beforehand (thanks Evan). TikTok has recently surpassed, well, everything on the Google Play Store, Apple’s App Store and any other store you can think of to become the worlds most downloaded app of 2020 and 2021 so far. This milestone makes the app the fifth non-gaming app to cross the 3+ billion downloads, the others being WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Facebook Messenger, which are all (obviously) Facebook-owned.  TikTok by the numbers According to a report by Sensor Tower, the app doesn’t look like it’s slowing down any time soon. In the first half of 2020, the app saw 619 million first time installs and…

Chinese tech maker Xiaomi held their event last night (or this morning if you want to be technical), sneaking in ahead of Samsung’s Unpacked event later today. During the event, it confirmed some rumours surrounding some of the products it showcased and had a few surprises as well. Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 The Mi Mix 4 was one of the more anticipated products slated for launch at this event. The big buzz here is Xiaomi’s first use of a technology called Camera Under Panel (CUP) to give you a completely bezel-less screen without losing the front-facing camera. There have, of…

Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. (SPE) has finalised the deal to buy the anime streaming site Crunchyroll for a sizable R17 billion, in a deal that’s been on the cards for nearly a year at least. It’s a little more complicated than that, with parent companies and majority shares and joint ventures, but the gist of it is now SPE controls both the Funimation and Crunchyroll anime streaming sites. Crunchyroll + Funimation = ??? SPE’s CEO Tony Vinciquerra said the company’s next goal is to “create a unified anime subscription experience as soon as possible.” But that’s all we’re getting for now.…

An explosion has completely destroyed generation Unit 4 at Eskom’s newly ‘completed’ Medupi power plant on Sunday. This is clearly a massive setback on a project that has seemed doomed to fail since its commencement in 2007. The explosion has taken the 800MW generator in unit 4 completely off the grid. That doesn’t bode well for the country’s already weak generational capacity. Load shedding has not been confirmed yet but we wouldn’t be surprised if an announcement isn’t too far off. Energy analyst, consultant and electrical engineer Chris Yelland posted pictures on Twitter that shows the destruction. https://twitter.com/chrisyelland/status/1424761349238894598 According to…
