Smartwatches have become exceptionally good at collecting information. They can tell us how long we slept, how hard our heart worked during exercise, how many calories we burned, and how much activity we packed into a day. For people who train regularly, though, the most useful insight may be the one that comes before the next workout: how ready is my body to do it all again?
That is the thinking behind Physical Readiness on the HUAWEI WATCH GT 7 Pro. Rather than leaving individual health and activity measurements scattered across different screens, the feature brings a range of signals together to provide a daily view of recovery and physical condition.
It is designed for the days when yesterday’s numbers alone do not tell the whole story. You may have slept for a reasonable number of hours but trained unusually hard. You may have had a quieter day but gone to bed late. Or perhaps everything has lined up, and your body is well recovered for the cycling session, padel match or round of golf you have planned.

More than another number to check
Physical Readiness assesses 14 different indicators, including sleep quality, heart-rate variability or HRV, emotional state and calories burned. These are then brought together into a Physical Readiness assessment, with a higher score indicating stronger recovery and a lower result potentially reflecting insufficient rest or heavier exertion.

The HUAWEI WATCH GT 7 Pro categorises Physical Readiness across five levels and, after an initial three days and nights of continuous wear, provides the wearer with a daily recovery assessment upon waking.
The value lies in looking at those signals together. HRV may mean little when viewed as an isolated number, and a single night’s sleep score cannot necessarily describe how the body has responded to several days of activity. Physical Readiness adds context by looking at the broader pattern.
Professor Xin Gao, Professor of Computer Science at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and Co-Chair of its Center of Excellence for Smart Health, evaluated the watch over ten days and singled out Physical Readiness as its most compelling wellness feature.
Knowing when to push and when to ease off
The HUAWEI WATCH GT 7 Pro has dedicated capabilities for activities including cycling, golf and padel. Padel players, for example, can track shot types, swing speed, heart rate, calories burned, rally length and shot distribution, while cyclists can plan routes and climbs using altitude and segment information. Golfers can use Plays-like Distance to account for changes in elevation when planning a shot.
All that information is useful once you are exercising, but Physical Readiness adds another layer before the session begins.
A high Physical Readiness result after good rest and a balanced training load can help reinforce that you are well recovered. If the score drops after late nights, a particularly heavy training period, or inadequate recovery, the watch can recommend taking things more slowly that day.
Over time, this can help the wearer see how training, sleep and recovery interact rather than treating them as separate parts of their routine.
Recovery only works when the watch stays on
Physical Readiness also depends on consistency. A watch cannot build a useful picture of sleep and recovery if it spends every second night on a charger.
The HUAWEI WATCH GT 7 Pro offers up to 21 days of battery life under light-use conditions and up to 12 days with typical use, making it easier to maintain monitoring through workouts, daily activities and sleep. Gao makes the point that continuous wear is fundamental to useful longitudinal health information because an algorithm cannot account for nights when no information was collected.
That combination is where Physical Readiness becomes interesting. The HUAWEI WATCH GT 7 Pro can collect detailed information while you are active, continue monitoring while you sleep, and then bring those signals together the following morning.
Instead of simply telling you what you did yesterday, it can help you understand how your body appears to have responded to it and give you a more informed starting point for deciding what today should look like.
The HUAWEI WATCH GT 7 Series is now available in South Africa from R5,999, with add-on offers starting from R169 per month over 36 months. Selected purchases include a HUAWEI FreeBuds SE 2 valued at R1,499 each through participating retailers while stocks last. Terms and conditions apply.
