At this year’s Festival of Motoring, iCaur gave attendees a peek at its upcoming V27 SUV. Fresh off its launch in China, the timing seems ripe for a South African follow-up. Fate has deemed us unworthy for now. In the meantime, iCaur has divulged some specs to hold us over.
Until it launches, that is. iCaur is still keeping some secrets close to its chest, such as the starting price for this hybrid SUV. A launch date is still unknown, though the big “pre-order” button on the automaker’s website somewhat dilutes the mystery. It’s safe to assume it’ll be along sooner rather than later, anyway.
iCaur V27 on the horizon
The highlight of the V27 is its Golden REEV (range-extended electric vehicle) powertrain. It integrates a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. With dual electric motors, the engine serves as a generator when battery levels drop low enough, preserving the battery and utilising the range efficiently.
Then there’s the 34.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, providing an electric-only range of 150km NEDC (128km WLTP). Pair it up with the engine, and iCaur claims the V27 will travel “more than 1,000 km”. Power-wise, the V27 has a combined output of 339kW. This should get the V27 sprinting to 100km/h in just six seconds.
It’s a “near-silent” affair that’s comparable to a pure electric vehicle, if you believe the marketing speak. Specifically, iCaur says the V27 won’t surpass 61dB, thanks in part to a 106kg weight reduction. Inside, iCaur has placed a 15.4in 3K touchscreen in the centre, and a 15-speaker sound system. Ambient lighting helps set the mood, as does the “Stellar Porthole” dual panoramic sunroof.
“As part of iCAUR’s future vision for South Africa, the V27 will expand the conversation around new energy mobility by offering a solution that is practical, flexible and suited to everyday driving conditions,” said Shannon Gahagan, head of brand and marketing for iCAUR SA. “It brings together electric efficiency, long-range capability and convenience in a way that speaks directly to local consumer needs.”
