Rumour has it that network audio specialist Sonos is gearing up to launch its second set of premium headphones, or an upgraded version of its first pair. The Sonos Ace impressed us as a first outing from a company that made a name for itself making speakers. The Sonos Ace Ultra should, if Sonos named it right, build on that.

Much of the Ace Ultra’s meat and potatoes are still unknown. Dubbed S52a, they were first spotted in a filing from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). That filing didn’t really say much, but it did hint at a few things. Namely, the headphones could eventually come in more colours than just black and white (although those are what we expect to see first), and that they should officially break cover soon. Possibly as soon as next month.
We also might know what the Sonos Ace Ultra could look like, thanks to alleged marketing images shared in a WinFuture report. From those, it appears Sonos has deepened the ear cups, moved the wear sensor, and slightly changed the microphone’s pill design. We hope that means Sonos has improved on the Ace’s active noise-cancelling abilities. They weren’t bad the first time around, but there was room for improvement.

Thankfully, it looks like Sonos is sticking with the slim, felt case and included cable caddy with the same 3mm to USB-C and USB-C to C cables as before. Unfortunately, we don’t know what they’ll cost yet. With ‘Ultra’ tacked on to the end, they’ll likely be more expensive than the regular Ace was when it launched for R13,000.
