Luxury brand Caviar has done some interesting stuff this year, following its Jobs Edition and T-Rex devices with a pair of Legends football-themed smartphones. These are, as is typical for the company, standard devices with a little bodywork. In this case, the bodywork features either Lionel Messi (on a Galaxy Fold 8 Ultra) or Ronaldo (on an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max).
And, as is also typical, either is likely to cripple your bank account. The cheaper of the two lots is the Ronaldo phone, which still starts at a staggering R270,000. No, we have not misplaced a comma nor added an extra zero.
Legends in your pocket
The reason you’ll pay at least R270k for a Ronaldo-themed phone (and as much as R315,000 for a 2TB iPhone 17 Pro Max)? It’s all about Caviar’s rebuild. And the exclusivity, since the company’s only making nineteen of these things. The footballer’s likeness is reproduced on the custom back panel using jewellery enamelling, with the other bits done up in 24-karat gold plate. The whole thing turns up in one of Caviar’s presentation boxes. Hopefully, it’ll be delivered by some chap in a limousine.
The other member of the Legends lineup is Lionel Messi. The core concept is the same — jewellery enamel in the Argentinian’s colours, 24-karat gold-plated accents, and a 24-karat gold-plated key to open the presentation box. Again, there are just nineteen units available, starting at R310,000 for the 256GB version of the customised Galaxy Fold 8 Ultra. If you’d rather have a terabyte of space to play with, expect to pay R327,000 for your unique football smartphone.
There’s also the option for customisation of each device, something folks with that sort of spare change will likely consider. Even if they don’t, each of the special edition Legends phones will feature individual numbering along one of the long edges. Just so you can show off that you bought the first (or last) one.
