If you still haven’t been convinced by Ninty’s Switch 2, there’s no harm in waiting it out. There’s a model packing a replaceable battery just waiting in the wings — as well as that Ocarina of Time remake. But if you’re still waiting for a meaningful hardware upgrade, rumours about the inevitable Switch 2 OLED edition have sprung up.
A worthy upgrade?
You may have to wait. A while. Nintendo’s in no hurry to upgrade a machine that’s selling like hot cakes, particularly when such an upgrade would likely come with a pretty steep price increase. According to a report from ZDNet Korea (via the folks at Android Authority), Nintendo is, for the moment, considering a 2028 release.
A lot has to happen before then. If the device is greenlit (and let’s be honest, it will be), it’ll officially go into development at the end of the year. That leaves the Japanese company free to begin mass production in the latter half of the year, and be ready in early 2028. Maybe Nintendo could have the next mainline Zelda ready by then?
As it is, the Switch 2 uses an HD LCD. It’s good. Better than good, in our opinion, seeing as the console is primarily hooked up to the TV. But a bump to OLED would certainly get our attention for more handheld experiences. The report reckons Samsung Display will provide the FHD OLED screen, just as it did last time.
