Yesterday, Meta launched Muse Image — a new generative AI model that’ll churn out slop based on a few bits of text. In other words, it’s like every other generative AI model we’ve seen. Except that this one does something the rest don’t. It can generate images based on just about any Instagram profile and the people therein, even yours.
Just when you thought Meta couldn’t suck any harder
“You can also @mention Instagram accounts in the Meta AI app to bring specific Instagram profiles right into your images,” reads the announcement. Worse yet, every Instagram account not set to private is already opted in. That means anyone can mention your account by name and generate images that look like you without consent.
Even if someone does use your profile, Meta mentions that you won’t ever know about it. The company’s policy states that “people may be able to create content with your Instagram content using AI features at Meta” and that “you will not be notified about content created using AI features at Meta.” Yeah, you’ll want to opt out, and soon.

Doing so isn’t exactly easy. You’ll need to open Instagram, hit your profile, and tap the three lines at the top. Scroll down to Sharing and reuse, and toggle off the ‘Posts’ and ‘Reels’ sections under the “Allow people to use your content on Instagram and with AI features on Meta” (via Digital Trends). At the time of writing, that language hasn’t yet hit our account, meaning Meta is dragging its feet to get it out to everyone.
Doing so will automatically disable future generations of your likeness or whatever else is lurking on your profile. But it won’t do much for any content that’s already been created while you were opted in to the system. The sooner you go ahead and disable it, the better. Unless, you know, you like seeing yourself in slop form.
