Sony is frightened. And rightly. Last week, PlayStation dumped two years’ worth of bad news on its players in the span of a week. If the lack of communication wasn’t enough of a warning, then maybe the company’s new retention methods (via Digital Trends) can give you some indication of where Sony’s head is currently at.
A bunch of PlayStation Plus subscribers across Reddit — or rather, those trying to become former subscribers — have reported being offered a deal they just can’t refuse. When attempting to cancel the PS Plus monthly subscription, Sony quickly pops its head in the door to give the player a sweet little 50% discount.
Don’t take the bait
We, uh, cancelled our monthly Essential subscription, and received no such luck. But for the folks who have gotten hold of such a deal, 50% off three months of Extra seems to be the best they’ll get. Others quitting their annual subscriptions have reported seeing smaller 25-33% discounts. It’s unclear who is eligible for a discount.
We imagine Sony is only targeting those with an Extra or Premium (Deluxe in South Africa) subscription, as that’s where the real money is. The Essential tier is already the cheapest of the lot, only offering access to online multiplayer and a couple of games per month. Still, there’s no harm in attempting to secure a deal for yourself.
Or is there? Sony has been known to dish out decent deals before, but never without an excuse. Could enough people be cancelling to make Sony sweat? Xbox dropped Game Pass prices earlier this year, so it’s possible that players could effect real change from Sony. All the recent reports reckon that isn’t the case, though.
