Herman Miller, the company usually known for its chairs, has launched a new motorised gaming desk. Although this isn’t the company’s first gaming desk, this new one serves as a more ‘accessible’ entry point. At least, compared to its previous non-motorised Motia desk. We’re still not sure if we would call something priced over $1,000 ‘accessible’.
Herman Miller appeals to gamers

The Herman Miller Coyl, to give it its full name, has a bunch of neat features that make this more than just an overpriced piece of wood with four legs. For starters, there are only two legs, which offer a height adjustment range from 57cm to 123cm.
While that’s not too novel these days — most motorised desks can be used comfortably while standing — the Coyl does it using a tactile rotary nob. It’s a nice touch, but we don’t see any buttons for saving height settings to profiles, which would be a strange oversight.

The most striking feature of this desk is also where it derives its name. The red coiled cable isn’t just for show. It serves as a considerably less cluttered way to get power up to the surface. It also feeds an integrated power strip located under the desk. That power strip could also run through a cable trough under the 152cm length of the desk. All the clutter located therein would be hidden by a flet-lined magnetic door. But that’s only if you purchase the additional equipment, including the cable trough and a perforated shroud with holes in it for you to peg things into.
The desk itself is available in four finishes: Clear on Ash, Studio White, Medium Matte Walnut, and Ultra Black. You get two options for leg colours, Black and White, but there is no mixing and matching, however.
We’re still waiting to hear if the desk will be available locally, and what it will cost if it does. Overseas, it starts at $1,095 (R17,870 directly converted). Adding the cable trough and shroud brings the price to $1,635 (R26,690 directly converted). An additional accessory bundle, which includes mounts for a controller or smartphone, a planter, a display shelf, and cable clips, will bring the total up to $1,825 (R29,790).
